Dearest Abi Daily fam
After posting my song Turn the Lights Back On, a few people asked about other songs I wrote way back in the mists of time.
This is a very rough demo for a song I wrote around 2003. Me and my friend Duncan recorded it very late one night, after I’d hurriedly scribbled the lyrics down in my trusty notebook.
From memory, my initial inspiration grew out of Ophelia’s death in Hamlet, but reading the lyrics back, I realise that there’s a mysticism that goes much deeper.
My favourite line is:
Show me beauty earth can’t bear, and the prizes heaven takes.
It ties in with much of my belief that out of grief and sorrow we are led to great revelation about ourselves and the meaning of our time on this earth.
We did it in one take.
I hope you enjoy listening.
Be seeing you.

The River Spoke of You Tonight
He sang into my heart
He saw you dance into the light
He knew you from the start
Wind lilies in her hair for memory sake
Show me beauty earth can’t bear
And the prizes heaven takes
Listen to the river speak tonight
Can you hear the river speak tonight?
The River Spoke of You Tonight
He wrapped me in his arms
The sky above me clear and bright
Like a melody of psalms
Wind lilies in her hair for memory sake
Show me beauty earth can’t bear
And the prizes heaven takes.
Listen to the river speak tonight
Can you hear the river speak tonight?
The River Spoke of You Tonight
He sighed into my ear
Never had he seen a soul so bright
Or wounded love so dear
Wind lilies in her hair for memory sake
Show me beauty earth can’t bear
And the prizes heaven takes
Listen to the river speak tonight
Can you hear the river speak tonight?
Listen to the river speak tonight
Can you hear the river speak tonight?
Beautiful! Lx
This pulled at the heartstrings Abi, stunning lyrics.
Bout time you and our Baroness of Burnley did a duo, as she plays the piano so beautifully.
