"an old fashioned slithery bedsheet" !!! wonderful. A val(l)ance is the oddest, most useless and perfunctory part of bedding - designed to hide the actual bed, and do nothing helpful at all. A bed mask if you like.

It's funny you should mention all the identical sideways emojis because I have no idea how to do any emoji at all on here which is why I normally just say "hahahaaa" but in this case I really wanted an emoji (to join in :-) ) so I copied and pasted from Jules' comment! Had I been able to choose I would have chosen a laughing emoji - maybe, at a push, with some tears but def not sideways...I'm just not that flamboyant! :-D see.....xxx

😁that's good! (unbalanced and half witty!) Van Tam - what's his moniker?

Expand full comment

Jonathan Van Tam was another one of those arseholes that took to the podium to scare us during the scam, he said we should wear masks for ever as did Susan Michie "Stalin's nanny" Who the f***ing hell do they think they are!

Expand full comment

quite!! I know who Van Tam is - sadly I am an expert in all these hideous people but just wondered what his equivalent name would be - Unbalanced, Half-witty and...

Susan Michie blocked me on twitter after an exchange a few years back (I hate her with a passion), and I found out last year that her mother is a very old and very close friend of the family!! My mother met Michie several times when she was a child. Her her mother's name is as familiar to me as a family member! So weird.

Yes.Strictly Come Dancing is mush. They have destroyed dance because they don't think that the music is of great importance to the dance! It's unbelievable they have them dancing the rumba, salsa or a waltz to something so naff as a Taylor Swift or a Take That track!Ugh🤣😫

Speaking as a tango DJ i cant remember one traditional tango track ever being used for dancing tango Argentino on there. It's a shame as there is some beautiful stuff.

Expand full comment

That doesn't sound much of a tango club.On the Strictly show it's all about dumbing down for the masses

I was talking about what they play on Strictly. Personally i only play traditional, there's a lot of great music in the genre.

I've just been on the Cambridge Union YouTube page, as they've now uploaded the whole thing.

Some of the comments are brutal; and rightly so.

I'll declare an interest (of sorts). I got my Master's in law from Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, back in the 80s. Back then, you were expected to think critcally and be able to marshall arguments and not merely parrot them...or your arse would be handed to you in sling. For me, that's how it should be, and it's the purpose of education.

As a student - and particularly for me as a law student, as I was - debating, and learning to debate properly, was not just a fun thing to do; it was essential. Debating, done properly, forces you to hone a lot of skills and to really think about stuff deeply before opening your mouth and making a point. I personally think debating should be encouraged as widely as possible, particularly in high schools, colleges, and university. Nor do I really think it matters what 'the motion' is; the main idea is to train you to marshall arguments and think more deeply about how to formulate them. Again, in many ways, it doesn't even matter if you believe what you are proposing/opposing.

What I saw on Thursday was, frankly, pretty shocking. None of the 'paper speakers', for or against the motion, appeared to have thought too deeply about the topic. Indeed, pretty much all of them appear to have relied on Microsoft AI 'Co-pilot' for what they 'produced'.

I had some issues during the stream, so I may have missed a bit. However, I don't recall any of the speakers, or anyone participating, looking at issues of informed consent or the ethical/moral aspects of 'mandating' an individual to have something injected into their body which may harm and/or potentially kill them. I didn't hear anyone mention the 'trolley problem'.

What I did see is a group of people willing to parrot arguments which were so obviously nonsense that nobody at Cambridge should ever be parroting: the idea of 'X million people were saved by the products' being one of them.

What I saw was, for me, an example of Desmet's 'mass formation' in action.

I haven't seen it yet, but I can imagine that the Tony Blair Institute will have some actors in place to speak for the advantages of losing our bodily autonomy 😡
